A Madison East High student died of head injuries after crashing his moped near the intersection of East Washington Avenue and North Sixth Street on Monday night.
Witnesses said Libasse Sarr, 19, was getting into the turn lane on eastbound East Washington Avenue at North Sixth Street at about 7 p.m. when he hit a curb, along the median.
Police said Sarr lost control, fell and hit his head.
Sarr was not wearing a helmet, police said.
He was transported to a hospital where he later died, according to police.
Counselors were made available at Madison East High School on Tuesday for faculty and students, district officials said. Tuesday was the first day that faculty and staff were back to school.
Sarr was scheduled to start his senior year on Thursday.
