Thief on bike flees with woman's phone, cash

Police said a man on a bike stole a woman's cash and cellphone on the east side.

Madison police said an 18-year-old woman was walking on the 3500 block of East Washington Avenue Wednesday at 11:32 p.m. when a man on a bike began making conversation with her.

The victim told police the robber at first seemed nice until he snatched her cellphone out of her hand.

The victim offered him money to get the phone back, holding out a $20 bill, police said. He took that too. The robber also threatened to shoot the victim, and she told officers she could see something dark tucked in his waistband.

The woman yelled and a skateboarder came to her aid. The robber fled peddling south on Mayfair Avenue, the report noted.

Police described the man as black with a dark complexion, between 17 to 20 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build.  He had crooked teeth, short hair, and his speech was slightly difficult to understand, according to the report. He was wearing a tan Columbia brand windbreaker. His bike was light-colored with curved handlebars with blue tape on them.
